​​Amstel House & Dutch House Open on Weekends

Starting April 5

The Amstel House and Dutch House are open for guided tours on Saturday and Sundays through year-end. Tickets are available at the New Castle Visitor Center at the Arsenal.

 

Group tours are available on weekdays or weekends by appointment. Contact us at 302-322-2794.

Delmarva Archaeology & History Symposium

April 5, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at The Arsenal

The Delaware State Historic Preservation Office, in partnership with the Archaeological Society of Delaware, is holding the annual symposium on Delaware archaeology and history. It will feature presentations highlighting archaeological investigations, historical research and related topics for the Delmarva Peninsula and surrounding areas. This event is free and open to the public.

Hearth to Heart Cooking Demos at the Amstel House

April 12, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

This year's historic foodways programs are in full swing!  Be sure to stop in at the kitchen of the Amstel House between 10 am and 3 pm to see what's on the menu! Our historic foodways program explores the foods and cooking techniques of the 18th century as well as the lives of people that worked in the kitchen of the Amstel House.

NCHS Annual Meeting & Lecture

April 23, 7:00 pm at The Arsenal

NCHS members and the general public are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Historical Society to learn about the programs, projects and initiatives of New Castle's community history organization. After the business meeting, the Society's executive director, Mike Connolly, will offer a brief presentation on the history of A Day in Old New Castle

Lecture: Archaeology & Foodways in Philadelphia

April 24, 7:00 pm at The Arsenal

How do we learn about what foods people of the past consumed? Documents and images, like paintings, can only tell us so much. Archaeology is a key source of information about the foodways of the past. Join us this month for a discussion with Dr. Teagan Schweitzer about how archaeology reveals the culinary secrets of historic Philadelphia. Advance tickets are required. $5.00 general public, NCHS Members are free. Get tickets here!

Lecture: Kitchens and Cooking in the 1920s

May 13, 7:00 pm at The Arsenal

In anticipation of the 100th Anniversary of A Day in Old New Castle, join us for a look back at the modern kitchens and recipes of the 1920s with Becky Diamond, a food writer, librarian, research historian, and author of The Gilded Age CookbookAdvance tickets are required. $5.00 general public, NCHS Members are free. A Day in Old New Castle

May 17, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Join us on the third Saturday in May for the 100th Anniversary celebration of A Day in Old New Castle - America's longest running house & garden tour! The day includes tours of historic homes, museums, public buildings, and gardens. Activities also include historical reenactments, concerts and children's actvities. The Amstel House and Dutch House museums will be open for tours throughout the day. At the Amstel House, the kitchen will be busy with hearth cooking demonstrations. Some events are free but tickets are required for house tours. Get tickets here!

Annual Garden Party

June 11, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Kick off the summer season with us at the New Castle Historical Society's Annual Garden Party!  You'll enjoy an evening of music and good company in the Colonial Revival garden at the historic Amstel House. Your ticket to the party includes light summer fare and an open bar. You don't need to be a member of the Historical Society to join us - we love meeting new people! Get tickets here!
